All natural skincare products are the safest and most effective. But, you can’t rely on product labeling. You have to learn a little about safe and effective ingredients.
Many compounds that are naturally occurring are not safe. When it comes to taking care of your skin, many of them are not effective. It depends, of course, on your individual needs, but here are some of the things to look for.
Natural skincare products should be preservative and fragrance free. Many products contain preservatives. The most common preservative used by the companies that make health and beauty aids are parabens.
If you look at the list of ingredients on the products that you are currently using, you will most likely see a word ending in “parabens”. There are several different kinds with prefixes like “methyl-“and “butyl-“. All of these are health hazards, and although they shouldn't be in them, you will find them in organic creams and lotions too.
Fragrances are the most common cause of a variety of allergic reactions, including skin irritations and rashes, sneezing, itching and watering eyes. Even some naturally occurring fragrances can be annoying and irritating if they are in lotion or cream that you use every day. So, try to avoid fragrances in your skincare products.
Many natural skincare products contain compounds that screen UVA, UVB or both. Some of the compounds are organic. Some are synthetic. The daily use of these compounds should be avoided for many reasons.
When you do need sun protection,
you should look for broad spectrum lotion that screens both UVA and UVB. The safest choice is zinc oxide with an SPF rating of 30 or more.
One of the organic sunscreens is called oxybenzone. More than two years ago, researchers published studies concerning the carcinogenic nature of this compound. When exposed to UV light, it stimulates free radical formation. Strangely enough, it’s free radical formation that we are trying to prevent when we use sunscreen.
But, even after the studies were published, no one pulled the creams off of their shelves. There are dozens of companies that still use it.
The best natural skincare products counter free radicals and prevent them from doing damage. They even actually undo some of the damage that’s already been done. No kidding, it’s been proven scientifically through clinical trials.
The ingredients that you should look for include the antioxidants vitamin E and coenzyme Q10. If properly formulated this combination provides moisture, protection from free radical damage and prevention of further damage.
Other good ingredients to look for include jojoba and honey. They are beneficial for conditions ranging from acne to psoriasis. Jojoba balances sebum production. In acne, the glands produce too much. In psoriasis, they produce too little. Jojoba also fades stretch marks, scars and wrinkles. Honey heals, kills bacteria and has antioxidant activity.
Particularly for dry skin on the heels, elbows and knees, you need natural skincare products that contain jojoba, honey and the antioxidants mentioned above. Sometimes it’s hard to find a good product, hopefully this information will help.
